Lawn Mowing Secrets Every New Castle Homeowner Should Know

A well-manicured lawn is a source of pride for many homeowners. But keeping your lawn looking its best takes more than just mowing it once a week. You can’t just water your grass, give it a trim and call things a day.

I mean… it would be nice!

But that doesn’t happen.

New Castle in Pennsylvania and Lawrence County has their own issues with weather, seasons and problems that you should know. For every homeowner, understanding these things will help you keeping your lawn a lush sea of green!

In this article, we will share some lawn mowing secrets that will help you achieve a lush, green lawn that will make your neighbors envious.

Mow at the right height

The ideal height for your lawn will vary depending on the type of grass you have. For most grasses, mowing at 2.5 to 3 inches will help to promote healthy growth.

Grass height is also an issue depending on the season we’re in.

Our opening cuts are usually 50% of what we would normally cut them down to. The main reason is so that we aren’t shocking your lawn. Killing grass is not our goal, right?

The same is true in the late Fall. We like to cut as low as possible. We also recommend removing leaves and all of the grass trimmings in those last days of October and early November.

Mow often

Mowing your lawn frequently will help to keep it looking its best.

If you want a good looking lawn in Lawrence County, cut your grass no later than once every 2 weeks. If you want it to look amazing, cut your grass every 5-8 days.

Remember, your grass is actually a plant (a lot of them). Keeping the size of those plants regulated means that what is left has extra water, extra nutrients and extra space. This equates to a much healthier lawn for you and your family!

Sharpen your mower blades

Dull mower blades can tear your grass, leaving it looking ragged and unhealthy. Once again, we aren’t in the business of killing grass.

Make sure to sharpen your mower blades before each use if possible. If you are doing this yourself, please, please, please make sure to disconnect your spark plug on your mower.

After all, accidents happen!

Water your lawn properly

Water your lawn deeply and infrequently. Aim to water your lawn for about 1 inch of water per week.

Beyond that, remember that you can underwater your lawn, as well as overwatering your lawn. Be mindful of how much sunshine, moisture and cutting that your lawn is getting.

Control weeds

Weeds can quickly take over a lawn if they are not controlled. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring to prevent weeds from germinating.

Weeds can also kill and hinder other plants, trees, shrubs and other lawn scaping plants you have. So, be mindful not just of grass and weeds fighting, but weeds in the growing cracks of your walkway, as well as weeds around rose bushes and gardens.

Dispose of grass clippings properly

Grass clippings can be a valuable source of nutrients for your lawn. However, if they are left on the lawn, they can mat down and smother the grass.

Having a high powered lawn mower allows you to mulch down your clippings into very manageable pieces. These usually get small enough that they fall directly into the soil and help to fertilize it.

However, with that said, we do recommend, in many cases, for our customers to elect using grass clipping removal. This is especially true on the last grass cuts of the season.
